About impaled myself...

Post by Growley »

Yesterday I was working on a stem, the third for this particular pipe. It's a short stem with a ring, so I'm shaping it on my lathe with a tool rest and gouges. All was going well when all of a sudden I got too close to the chuck and the jaws caught and turned my gouge into a hurdling spear of death.

It hit me smack in the center of my belly handle end first and bounced to the floor... Had it been the sharp end, I'm certain it would have done some real damage.

It served as a good reminder. Oh, the stem got screwed up too. My re-sharpen of the tool must of sucked, and it chunked it up beyond repare. I started #4 today. I swear, when I was just learning, I never made 4 stems for a pipe. But back then, I probably should have on some :D

Holy crap, be careful Brian!

And let us know when that fourth stem is done. :)

Ha, we'll see about posting it. I'm pretty sick of this stem and this pipe. I might just finish it and make it a shop pipe.

Right. Everybody knows you have to duct tape the torch to a real long piece of angle iron and stand way back and look the other direction when you do that....

My Favorite is the tank that falls over and knocks the valve off then goes shooting through the warehouse right into the foremans face. You know the asshole had it coming....

And to get the thread back on topic, I did the exact same thing as you Growley. Except I had my face right in front of what I was turning and the butt of the tool cracked me in the face so hard I thought it broke my nose... I don't think it did, but the center of my face was numb for an hour.

I KNEW there was a major plus-side to the etch-sketch method!

Yeah be careful. A stem profile is hardly worth the Darwin Award.
