Source for Horn stems?
Source for Horn stems?
Any of you guys have a good source for horn stems or horn that I would be able to cut a stem out of?
I know horn smells awful when you work on it and has a number of other idiosyncrasies, but a while back a smoked a pipe with a horn stem and way very surprised how comfortable it was. Very soft on the teeth.

I have a few dozen from the thirties which are on the narrow side, there's a mix of round taper and diamond taper with a selection of ali tennons. Great for group one or two but to fine for anything much bigger-oh and they are all straight.

Cows or Oxen are the best sources of horn. Most other animals don't even have them.

Well, I'm in Texas so that shouldn't be a problem. Guess its time to invest in a rope and a hacksaw. Look out cows!e Markle wrote:Cows or Oxen are the best sources of horn. Most other animals don't even have them.

That is super bloody business. I watched a vet do a de-horn once, and you'd swear she had just gone in and done a Kill Bill type massacre.
ALL YOUR PIPE ARE BELONG TO US!

Find the ones on the front of a car, you'll be doing the owner a favour.

Yep, that it is. I used to help dad and grandad dehorn and brand calves. That pressurized blood shoots out at least 3 feet. I've only helped dehorn one full grown mamma cow. That was a chore. It took all hands and the cook.

Sort of an older post but this may help.
Horn is also used by custom walking stick makers. Near as I can tell they use either water buffalo or ram's horns primarily. Their suppliers may be a possible source for horn. Also when I was reading up on making walking sticks I read that horn can be bent by using heat. Whether what works for cane handles is also able to work on something as small as a pipe stem I couldn't say.

Ah the famed and rare Yeti horn. Who's got his address? Let's do some harvesting.

I've used these and they polish up nicely.
They come approximately 3/4" by 6" rod. I've never tried to bend them. And yes, they will piss off your wife if
your shop is in the house.
