how shallow can you make mortise and chamber
how shallow can you make mortise and chamber
Two separate questions:
If I am using a half inch delrin tenon, which by its nature will have extra strength and grip, (more surface area) how shallow can I make the mortise in order to really get a deep bend? Is there a go no shallower than?
And I made a very small pipe, and the bowl is only about 3/4" deep, it seems really really shallow, is that too shallow?

"but rev, isn't smoking a sin?"
well I suppose if one were to smoke to excess it would be a sin
"but what would be smoking to excess?"
Why smoking two pipes at once of course

Deep enough so the stem don't fall out

Just get yourself a lathe and ditch delrin

Lol! Andrew is very pleased with his switch to integral tenons.andrew wrote:Just get yourself a lathe and ditch delrin

I have a lathe, and make some of my tenons integral, but I prefer delrin in most cases

Re: how shallow can you make mortise and chamber
What Chris said on mortise depth. There's a ideal ratio between tenon diameter and tenon length where the thicker the shorter the tenon needs to be due to surface area. I'm sure someone has a mathematical equation for it if you're into that sort of thing. For me, I just shoot for 1/2" to 5/8" in most cases and call it good.
As for chamber depth, practically any reasonable depth will work. Pot smokers have been smoking their weed in shallow chambers for a very long time. As for what depth is BEST for burning tobacco I can't say but I don't like to go under an inch and tend to stick around 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" in most cases.

It is much easier to fix a broken tenon than a broken shank.
The best way to assure the shank will break instead of the tenon? Make the tenon short.

Well going with the theory of 1:1.62 is the most ideal and attractive value for everything. A 5/16" dia. tenon is .3125 multiplied by 1.62 would equal
.506 so by that formula half inch length is right on.

Chamber - Make it as long as it can be in the design of the shape.
Mortise - Make it as short as at has to be for a good fit.
