Thin Walled Reverse Calabash Morta Blast
I started on a morta reverse calabash last night and got a bit carried away removing material. I'm down to about 1/10th of an inch wall thickness all the way around the shank. I know I will need to blast lightly and carefully, but is it going to blast through into the reverse calabash chamber? If it will, I may want to stop now and start over, rather than epoxy the shank extensions.

Only way to find out for sure is to try.

When I want to make very thin walled reverse calabashes I insert a sleeve, it only needs to be thin but it means if you blast any micro holes (very possible when working with morta) they will not leak.

The sleeve is a good idea. What do you make the sleeve from?

I put Delrin sleeves in ALL of my R-Cs, thin or thick.sandahlpipe wrote:The sleeve is a good idea. What do you make the sleeve from?

I use polyester or acrylic, depends what I have at hand and if I want to make it a feature or not.

Thanks, guys! I ended up using an acrylic sleeve. Hopefully he doesn't smoke the pipe hot enough to melt the acrylic. I've heard of that happening where someone melted the delrin tenon on a pipe.

Assuming you only lined the cooling chamber and not the bowl then I think you will be ok

Yes. Though it just so happens that my ebonite sleeve fits perfectly in the top of the chamber...
