New house, new shop!
Haven't been around much this summer as I've been dealing with a military move from Virginia to Michigan, as well as buying a new house and getting all moved in, plus taking a much needed month of leave after 3.5 years of constant deployments far, far away from home. Things are finally settling down and I have time to put my shop together. The basement has a room that was previously used as a workshop. Here are some pics as it was when I moved in, minus all my tools.
I've decided to renovate, including putting in a new bench(the existing one was not well built), and wiring it up for shop lights and proper outlets where I need them. Dust collection will be installed as well. This pic is day 1 of renovations. Gonna get messier before it gets better! I'll be posting progress.

Welcome back! Can't wait to see you get some tools set up and back to making pipes!

Re: New house, new shop!
Thanks everyone. Been busy with life, but managed to get a bit more done. Lathe is set up and new bench is built. Still gonna build some storage under the bench, but for now it works. Got the dust collector in. Waiting for the hoses to get it installed, then I can start making pipes again. I'll also be setting up my band saw, drill press and 12" disk sander to the right of the lathe.

Cool space. I like it. For me the lathe base would get in my way.

Re: New house, new shop!
When I had it set up at my old place, I didn't have the 4x4 going across the front of the lathe stand, but I found that I was always putting a block there to rest my foot on. It's just comfortable for me while I work. Weird, I know. So I decided to just put one it permanently this time, and it has the added benefit of making the stand more sturdy and there's noticeably less vibration now. Anyways, I've made some significant progress in the last 2 days. Powers tools are set up and dust collection installed...well, partially. Enough to get started making pipes again anyways. I have to make some sort of dust hood to set up at the lathe for shaping. Will also put in another shop light above that bench. If anyone has any suggestions on improving the configuration of the shop, I'm all ears. I'll probably end up changing a few things once I start working and getting a feel for it anyways, so any input is appreciated. Cheers.

I gotcha. Maybe I should throw a block under mine Once you get into a couple of projects, you'll realize what needs to be adjusted, moved, etc. Atleast that's what happens with me.
Re: New house, new shop!
Before you get into any serious work you should paint up those walls, a nice bright white/off white will really help with colours and lighting.

I like that idea Chris.

You gotta admit it's better than the shed in VA... Plus probably warmer in the winter

James, I can't tell you how happy I am to be out of that shed. I had to run a power cord across the yard every time I wanted to work, and if the weather was really bad, I was SOL. The winters here are pretty harsh, but that doesn't matter, because I'll be in the HEATED basement! This new place is a million times better. AND I have permission from the boss to smoke inside here!
