First off, good God Rad! That makes my balls do that crawly thing just hearing about it. I am glad everything is ok.

Jim, I bought some pin/plug guages from mcmaster car for 2.50 each. For the mortise I bought .3125" ( I use a 5/16" tenon) and then went up two steps by .001. That way I can get a snug fit even if my mortise is a little bigger. Buying them indivisually is much cheaper than an entire set.

I did the same for 1/4" and 3/16" for dealing with bamboo.

thanks for the info john

are the sharp corners rounded on pin gauges.
i bought some drill bits blanks to try the same and had to round the sharp edges as the will cut into the walls.

Hi Jim,

The pins that I have don't have sharp edges.

Just had a good one last night, I was rustifying (spelling?) a stummel, I use a old hole saw attached to a handle, well as you can guess I jammed that baby right into my thumb. Well I jumped up and danced around a little bit and apparently taught my 4 yr old a new word that he felt compelled to tell his mother about.
