I don't have anything made up currently, but if you give me a couple days I can get something put together. This is best done with a video, because pictures can't really convey the process. It's simple to show, but complex to explain.
Sounds great! Consider a couple of days given. ;)

It's no video, but this might help you to visualize the process until Kurt gets something put together; the red marks are the drill bit; insert it straight through the slot, into the 1/16 hole. Then angle it slightly and pull it back out, using the drill bit threads as a cutting tool. All processes used to create imagery copyright Sasquatch.

Great little diagram! I would offer one tweak: I recommend going deeper with the slot. That gives the picture though, for sure.

I find doing that process works great if I drill 3 holes in a line. The first all the way through, of course, and one about 1/2" deep on either side. Slot is half done when you clear out the garbage, then you just gotta smooth things out.

This is a great diagram. Thanks for it!

Kurt finished up his video and it is extremely helpful. I believe he's planning on reposting on this forum, but I'll still include the video in the thread update that I'm about to do. I highly recommend it!

I'll post this at PMF also, but in the stems section in a separate thread.

Humph. For some reason I couldn't get the video to post or figure out how to link to the thread that Kurt created containing the video. Well, it's in "Stem Work" and is titled "Modifying the slot of a preform pipe stem - with video!"

I hope you do to!

Having just arrived home from a brief trip, I'll be trying to find some time to start working on my pipe again and will continue to post pics and maybe a video or two as things progress.

Why is almost every post in this thread posted by UberHuberMan containing the quotes of other members making comments?

This is very confusing to me. :)

I just like attention. :P

I'm reposting comments from the Brothers of Briar forum thread by the same name. Trying to be helpful, but please lemme know if I'm being obnoxious.

No, not obnoxious at all. I just couldn't figure out why all the other posts were only showing up as quotes in your posts.

Hey guys!

Things are happening, dust is being made, stems are being worked, mortises drilled, tennons fitted. Update photos soon!

Looks like I've got a lot to learn. Patience and taking care are two lessons learned here. I knew that I'd drilled a bit low, but while trying to round out the bottom of the bowl, I opened up the two holes you see above. So many would've/could've thoughts floating through my head at this moment.

I'm probably going to still use the wood to practice fitting the tennon and mortise, but this poor briar will never be smoked.

Anyone else ever done this? I've sunk about 13 to 14 hours into this thing at this point. This feels awful.
