I was about to post a pipe for critique but then realized my light box is more of a "dim" box. im finding it hard to get sufficient lighting without glare. anyway, ill read some google searches on good light boxes. thanks for this, it really is a necessity.
An easy way to do it is with PVC pipe, or even just wire hangers. I used to use fabric over a bent piece of mat material (like the kind that goes in a picture frame) and used spring clamps to hold it all together. Then I got some clamp lights, like the ones at Lowe's. If you opt for more than one light, be sure to get the same bulb for all involved.
So Nate... Is there C4 involved as well? Should we be calling the Feds? :takethat:
Hahaha, no it's PVC pipe, not iron.

Nate was involved in making the pipe so there had to be a funny looking gear thing.

Here's my set up using a PVC light tent I made on a card table and I find it works great with the proper lighting and I'm using an old antique Sony CD-1000 (that's the one that takes mini CD's and not a memory card) The only thing it's missing is a crank on the side.

The idea of a light box is to have the light outside the box shining through. If you shine the light directly onto the pipe, you'll get harsher shadows and more glare off the shiny parts. The tent looks like a decent setup otherwise.

Guess that's why Ron has the lights pointed at the backdrop and just below the pipe as opposed to right on it......or am I seeing that wrong?

I was trying to convey that having lights inside the box will give you glare and shadows, while having the light outside the box will diffuse the light. I would recommend putting lights on top and on either side of the outside of the box and position one light from the front.

Also, if you're not already, use 6500K white bulbs. They give you the full spectrum of light.

And I will repeat that the lights shining into the front of Ron's box ARE NOT pointing at the pipe, but at the backdrop above it and the front of the stand he has them sitting on. This way there are no shadows and no glare.

Bumping this for new members. If you want a real good proper critique, use a plain background and zoom out so there is not too much distortion when taking pics. #2 to #5 are critical and must be taken at the correct angles.

And one more thing from a not-so-old fart, pre-computer born baby:
If the guys need to click on an attachment to see your work, chances are good that they will just skip it and go without checking it out. Post the photos please, not attachments.
Or maybe that's just me..

I just noticed that photobucket kicked the bucket for free display of hosted photos. Updated all pics in the original post.

It's not just you, especially since they open in the same window instead of a new tab, which means I accidentally close the tab after viewing and then usually decide it's not worth hunting through my history to find what I'd been looking at.

For people posting: fixing that is easy - use https://postimages.org/ - it's perfectly adequate, free, and will automatically resize your images down to 800px wide if you tell it to. Then grab the 'direct link' once it uploads. When you're posting, click the "Img" button and put your hosted image URL between the middle square brackets ][
Easy!
