has anyone tried one of those infrared thermometers with the laser pointer and measure the temperature of the bowl? could even measure the inside : outside temperature to see heat transmission which would add some control for chamber temperature.

I remember the first time I saw one of those. An HVAC tech was using it to balance the duct outputs in a building. Slick widget, for sure. Wanted one ever since.

I saw your question the other day, made a mental note to answer after I'd checked, then spaced it. Sorry.

The two small pipes both have 7/32" thick walls. The smooth was made in 1890, and remained unsmoked until two years ago. The blast is a '64 Dunhill that I bought as an estate.

The bigger pipe is an LB-sized Castello with walls around 3/8" (the pebble rustication makes measurement inexact). It was included both as a size reference and because it is considerably hotter in hand than either of the little ones.

So the question is, would that Castello heat up for me too? Would anyone get the same results because it's that piece of wood (too light, too heavy, too much (not enough?) silica?) or is the fact that you can pull twice as much air through a Castello as you can the old English pipes to blame?
