I have a bunch of threads on bamboo shanks bookmarked. I'll post the links once the voting is officially done.

I think that is a valid concern. That being said, and this might sound a little harsh but it's meant in the best possible way, my personal philosophy is that success usually only comes through trial, error, and experiencing/overcoming failure and difficulties. If we end up doing a bamboo shank, some of us, including myself, will probably ruin some bamboo before this thing is done, but some good lessons will probably be learned, and that is what I see as one of the purposes that the PITH serves.
One of the main functions of this forum will also be served in that the less experienced will for sure be calling on the more experienced for guidance and help. I believe that one of the main reasons this forum exists is so that we can help each other grow. Regardless of what shape is chosen, I have no doubt that these things will, and should, happen. My $.02 Not saying I'm right, just saying that's my perspective.
I agree with this, whole-heartedly, and while I fall into the latter category (green, clueless, but eager) I'm willing to give it a go. The resources here are massive, and everyone is so helpful... but, I'm not sure I'll even know the right questions to ask.... I say this as I'm rushing off to begin an exhaustive search for 'bamboo shank how to's' in the back catalog....
Good points, and I like the attitude. I will be happy to lend some guidance in the process as well.

Last night I attended the first meeting of the year for the OKC Pipe Club. Tyler graciously hosted it at his home in Edmond, OK.
I was able to pick his brain for tips on working with bamboo and he gave me a nice piece from his stock. THANKS TYLER!
I would encourage those that have not utilized this material before to check out his bamboo blurb on Pipedia http://pipedia.org/wiki/Bamboo_Shanks.

It's official. Sitter with a bamboo shank, and it can't be a poker. This should be interesting!

Okay, pacing the bedroom floor at 3am with the baby last night, I thought of a question: I've been reading Tyler's bit on pipedia, and it's super helpful but I wonder about one thing. How does one shape the transition from briar to vulcanite sliver to bamboo once it's all drilled and glued up? I seem to remember reading that you shouldn't sand the bamboo. But it seems to me to fit everything flush you would need to file and sand them together... (unless you're George, who's ninja skills allow him to flush shape without touching...). So, glue everything up and file and sand together? or DON'T TOUCH THE BAMBOO?

thanks fellas, Jeremy.

Question about the definition of "sitter." Does it have to sit on the bottom of the bowl only (i.e. without the stem/button touching the table), or can it just balance upright when you set it down, no matter how?

My assumption was that it would have to sit on it's own, just the bowl/stummel. Mainly one point of contact, although there are some sitters with more than one point of contact, but those are rare, but do exist. If you think about it, there are plenty of pipes that would be called sitters that are actually not, if you broaden the definition. I've pretty much settled on doing a cutty.
