Hey guys, so iv always believed in the past that a chamber that was not pre-carbonized required more work to break in, but smoked better long term due to the tobacco oils. Im wondering what yall's thoughts are. I'm realizing it something i should more heavily consider doing to the pipes I make, as many of my customers would likely benefit from the simplicity of pre-carbonization. Whats the best way to do it? iv heard about mixtures of charcoal and buttermilk. Is that better than burning it? and once the mixture is applied, do you let it sit? or burn it? i have no clue. Can it be used to raise a chamber bottom drilled slightly too low for the air hole? Thanks.

Do a search for bowl coatings. There is quite a bit of information in a handful of threads where we have discussed the pros/cons before.

What scottie said for doing a search on the forum for formulas and methods of bowl coatings. No burning necessary.

As for fixing poorly drilled pipes, I wouldn't waste my time. If I mess up on the drilling, I toss the block aside and move to the next. If I were gifted a pipe by someone and it had poor drilling and I needed to fix it, I would use pipe mud, but never in something intended for sale. Pipe mud is made with water and cigar ash. Just a very small amount of water mixed into cigar ash packed into the bottom of the chamber will raise the bottom of the bowl up to where you need it.

Its Premals secret recipe for bowl coatings, he taught me when I was there;
Tabasco, Iodine, Avocado, Frogs and Orange Juice.
Mix well before use. And dont tell anyone what you use, just say its waterglass.

Similar question, but for the outside surface of the bowl. I have seen and done, torching the surface of the wood furniture before clear coating it. Apparently its a Japanese technique called Shou-sugi-ban or Yakasugi somenthing. Its a interesting finish, anybody tried that? I searched extensively but found no such pipes .

It's been done. It can give a look similar to a sandblast, but I've never seen it look great.

For what its worth, and i suspect not much, it looks like this.

Experimented a litle, AND because the damn thing has cracks AGAIN, i baked it than i scrubed it with a steelbrush.
Maybe i will polish it just to see how it looks, colour looks nice.
To transmit some more expirience gained in this proces, firing the surface helps detecting cracks.
