Pipe 18 - '55' commission

Post by fiddlestix »

I never got around to taking any other good pictures of this one before it shipped out today, but thought I'd post it here anyway. I'm not necessarily looking for critique, as it was a commission and I'd hate for the new owner to stumble across the thread and find out just how crappy his new pipe actually is. :) If you do see something that needs to be brought to my attention, please feel free to shoot me a PM.

The customer wanted my interpretation of a '55'. He allowed plenty of latitude deign-wise. His preference was for it to be a blast which of course meant that when I had the pipe shaped there would not be a single flaw to be found and pretty stinkin' nice straight grain. The rings looked pretty promising though, so I blasted it. The picture doesn't really do the blast justice. Hands down the best blast I've ever achieved.

The shank extension is chocolate swirl bakelite. I've had some of this for a few weeks and thought the opportunity to do a light color blast might be a good time to break it out.

I think the top line of the shank could have been a little straighter. It dips down a little and the blast accentuated even a little more. I also need to get my compound slide fixed so I can make some military mounts. This would have been a prime candidate for a military bit.

Thanks!
Mark

As far as 55s go, that may be my personal favorite (this being relative, however, as I hate the 55 shape.) The blast is great and and I don't think you could have made a better choice for a shank cap on this particular pipe.

Completely agree. Great blast and the cap is perfect.

Nice shape and finish. But...

I still think the 55 shape is butt ugly.

Sorry about that, Mark.

I think your execution is excellent. Yours is the best interpretation of the 55 shape I've seen. I still don't like the shape.

Wayne has too much time on his hands during the weekdays, or maybe he is spending too much time with Nate.

People have been asking me that for 44 years now. I still don't have a handle on a good answer.
