1502 - Swanny, the speedy bamboo

Post by T. Suominen »

Hi all!

Been a long time since last posting anything, but here's finally one. A speedy billiard/apple with bamboo shank.

It has a sort of story behind it, in the beginning i didn't care for the use of bamboo as an adornement in pipes until i one day saw a simple bamboo billiard made by Tom Eltang... and i was sold instantly. I realised that it is possible to use bamboo (or other materials, for that matter) on a pipe in such a way that, when you look at it, you get the feeling that it was the only possible way for that pipe to be made.
This often happens to me when i look at pipes made by Per or Ulf from S.Bang, that there's only one possible shape in the world for that one particular block to take, and these guys nail it 99,5% of the time...
Ofcourse this requires about a lightyear more talent than i have, but this sort of echoes that Eltang bamboo i saw.

This was my first bamboo experiment, it was slow, challenging and fun. The pipe has several issues, for example the stem is a bit hastily made...

This will also be my last for a while, there's some moving and house things going on in real life which require me, with a heavy heart, to pack up the 'workshop' and put this pipemaking thing on hold for a while. Hopefully a short while, but could easily take a few years... But as a silver lining in this business there's a fair chance that in the future i might have a bigger, separate workshop that could allow for more serious approach to pipemaking.

But in the meantime, would like to hear your thoughts and don't hold back.

Thanks.

EDIT: Yes, the photos are crappy and the chamber's not sanded. I apologize for these insults :).

There's a lot I like about this shape. The fit and finish are good, and I can see how you repeated the knuckles evenly on the stem. My eye is drawn right away to the heel of the pipe because I think it drops a bit too far below the bottom of the shank. The only other thing I'm picking up on is that the spacing on the bamboo is a bit far apart. If you do it again, I'd like to see the knuckles tighter together. I think that would really make this pipe sparkle.

Good luck with the move! We just moved and I'm still rebuilding my workshop now. Can't wait to get back in there.

Just get a bamboo squeezer to shorten the knuckles.

The heel of the bowl should drop below the shank; especially on straight pipes with thinner bamboo. What you've done is perfectly acceptable and the right way to do it. The knuckle spacing is also fine. Not every bamboo pipe has to have uber tight knuckles to look good. However, it's usually better visually if the space between the last knuckle and the stem ring/flare to be spaced the same or similar to the space between knuckles. Also the space from the knuckle on one end of the bamboo to the end of the bamboo should be the same on both ends. In other words, don't listen to Sandahl, he's been sitting in the sun too long and baked his brain.

I agree with you, Wayne, at least to an extent. The bowl should drop below the shank line. I just think it drops a bit more than is necessary on this pipe. As for knuckles, I think the spacing is correct for this piece of bamboo. I just think it wasn't as good a piece of bamboo as could have been on the pipe.

As far as sun is concerned, Minnesota is pretty warm as it gets to 70° this time of year. That's enough to bake anyone's brain.

Thanks guys,

The bamboo i have is some second rate stuff from ebay, i got 10 rods of which maybe 2 are half-way usable... I would've liked the bamboo to be thicker but... hence the big drop on the heel. I also did study and consider most of the things Wayne said, about the proportions on a bamboo shank but since this was my first and all of the machining did not go as planned.., well, here we are...

Yeah, i saw one of those on TV-Shop and almost did buy one, but then decided to get the Über ThighMaster Max, Super Edition. Man, my abs have never been fitter!!

Wayne's got it spot on.
All in all, I would say pretty well done for a first bamboo.

Thanks Charl!

Will try to improve for the next one, whenever it may be...
