Dublin?

Post by notow1 »

I'm not sure this is a dublin but it is what I was trying to make. My main concern is if the shank is to thick. I still struggle with proportions and hope that can be learned. Any advice and critiques are very welcome, Norm.ImageImageImageImageImage

Norm,

I like the finish on this pipe.

I can't tell whether you meant to make a straight Dublin or a bent Dublin. It looks like a straight Dublin where the bowl is tilted the wrong way. The tilt backwards makes the whole thing look funny. The chin sticks out, the cheeks are odd, and the stem looks odd. It's all because the bowl was drilled at the wrong angle. For most straight pipes, you want the bowl to be about 93° in relation to the shank.

Oh boy, I did most of that on purpose. Well back to the drawing board. Thanks Jeremiah, Norm. Oh I forgot, does the shank look too thick?

I think the shank is maybe a tad too thick, but if you had made it thinner, this particular shape would have looked odder.

The stem work looks nice though. I can definitely tell you've been working on it.

This Dublin 55 looks fine to me

Seriously though, I agree with Jeremiah. Nice finish and stemwork, funky bent/straight conflict.

At first glance from the side profile I was thinking it resembles a skater. Nice bevel on the bowl rim.
Acting like a loon in the front yard, close to the road.

This shape is not wrong by any means. The drilling and angles are fine. The finish is uneven in a few areas. Due to buffing or application of finish? Shank is thick in proportion to the bowl.
