PITH 2016!!!!!!
DEADLINE IS AUGUST 7TH
Alrighty, so it's that time of the year again! Time to start talking about PITH 2016. Here are the rules for the less experienced people, or those who have not been around that long. The pipe in the hat(PITH) trade is something we do here about once a year. We choose a shape that participants have to make, and set a deadline. Once the deadline hits, we randomly generate a list of all participants, and you send your pipe to the person below you on the list. You receive the pipe from the person above you. Upon receiving your pipe, you inspect it, smoke it, and give an honest and thorough critique back to the maker. The pipe is yours to keep.
The pipe in the hat trade is designed as a tool to help you grow in your pipe making skills. It can certainly be intimidating to jump into something like this with all these more experienced people participating, but getting the type of feedback that comes with putting your pipe in the hands of someone else is much more beneficial than posting pictures. Plus you get a pipe out of it. Some of the shape requirements might seem like a big challenge, but the PITH is designed to force you out of your comfort zone and to help you get some experience in the art of pipe making. The idea here is that the best way to grow is by challenging yourself. This is a great way to get some good practice and helpful feedback.
So first things first, lets throw some ideas around about what shape we will do this year. Feel free to offer some ideas and let's get this thing rolling! If you want to participate, just post "I'm in" or something to that effect. And with that, I'll officially declare my participation. I'm in!

Re: PITH 2016!!!!!!
The idea was offered that the only requirement be that it have a military mount. I like this idea.

I like this idea too, as it's definitely high on my try-it-out list.... but devil's advocate: does this exclude a lot of folks without certain tooling?mightysmurf8201 wrote:The idea was offered that the only requirement be that it have a military mount. I like this idea.

I vote briar calabash (complete with expansion chamber, and no RCs). Incidentally, that should give the opportunity to do a military mount without excluding those lacking said tooling).
EDIT: or heck, why not open it up to RCs as well?

Re: PITH 2016!!!!!!
I'm in tentatively. I have to redeem myself for missing last year. Still much will depend on deadline and shape.
Re: PITH 2016!!!!!!
I'd love to join. Can you participate even if your last pipe caused something akin to a gag-reflex in the gallery?
Re: PITH 2016!!!!!!
Yep, i'm in.
Military mount sounds good, and gives plenty of room for creativity.

Everyone is welcome to participate, regardless of skill level. In fact, those less skilled have the most to gain from participating , so don't be shy!calsbeek wrote:I'd love to join. Can you participate even if your last pipe caused something akin to a gag-reflex in the gallery?

Re: PITH 2016!!!!!!
I have to emphasize this... last year's PITH pushed me into a massive period of growth. That being said, you have to go for it.... I made about 8 bamboo pipes before the one I submitted, did a ton of research, asked a zillion dumb questions, got a huge amount of help, and it pushed me to get a lot better. Go for it!mightysmurf8201 wrote:Everyone is welcome to participate, regardless of skill level. There needs to be at least one good pipe in the lineup, so I'm in.
Military Mount all the way.
If anybody is too broke for a military drill bit, but really wants to participate, I may could loan one out for the project. Of course the consequence for not returning it far outweigh it's monetary value, so I would expect the equipment back in a timely manner.
