Real name: Doug

Age: 30

Location: California

Years a pipe smoker: 8?

How you got into pipe making: I haven't exactly started yet, so I'm weighing my options as to what route I want to take. From what I've gathered so far, I'm inching towards a few files and a drill press, and of course any additional material I might need. Right now my max budget is $1000. I want to create something I enjoy using, and to share with friends.

Other interesting facts: I named my dog Burley, I go through periods of pipe depression, my pinky toes are abnormally small, I seek humility and ways to become a better person.

Welcome.
Keep your eyes on Craigslist for tools, you can usually find a drill press etc.
I started with a $200 drill press and a $500 lathe new from Harbor Freight. I occasionally have buyers remorse for getting cheap stuff, but usually figure out how to get the job done.
Had I waited , I might have better tools, but might not be where I am now in terms of the craft.( it was my "Way", Seeker)
You can purchase briar and rod from such sources as Vermont Freehand or JHLowes to get started.
Other stuff, you can add as you see the need. Otto Frei is a great source for very pricey files which you may not think you need, but, after using, will become indispensable.
I am not sure what you can do about the pinky toes, the dog, and the depression

I didn't even consider craigslist. I will look into these sources now.

Depression increases when my dog eats my toes.

Thank you for the welcome, and information!
