Holy shit dude, no need to apologize. Best of luck with the recovery!

Got these buffed and waxed today, no nice pics in the lightbox yet but I figured I'd go ahead and post them. I was originally planning on letting whomever drew my name pick which one they wanted, but I think one is better than the other and that's the one I plan on sending.

For all pics except the last one, #1 is top and left, #2 is bottom or right. #1 has wonky grain orientation (it was the practice pipe) but I think it ended up shaped somewhat better from the top view, specifically because I cut the shank too narrow on #2. #2 is probably shaped better from the profile view, has better grain, and has a nice spot of plateaux on the bottom. Neither actually bows out at the stem, that's camera foreshortening. Both have too much meat on the cheeks. I'll do proper gallery posts at some point and will give my normal full critique then.

Anyway eager to hear which one is the consensus better pipe from you all, I know which one I think it is, but I don't want to color anyone's opinions.

My hand is almost back to normal, but I'll be out of the country next week, and into the hospital for gall bladder removal the week after, possibly out for 3~weeks afterwards.

I don't think I'll get an author done anytime soon :(

Just to check, are we still thinking end of July for the deadline? I've got a few other commissions, etc. coming up, trying to figure out timing and priorities for things.

Hey guys, I am sorry but I have to bow out. My wife and I have started a new business and all of my time is going into that. I haven't even been in the shop in a couple of months. Once again I apologize.

I'm afraid I'm out also. My wife tripped on a curb not long ago and broke her hip. Not shattered thankfully. My time is spent with her physical rehab. Maybe next time.

hey gang,
I've just about wrapped up my author, need to make a bag, do a bowl coat, etc....

... but I wanted to let you know I'm headed out of town (country) for a few weeks. If all goes as planned, we'll be back in Portland on Aug.9 and I'll be able to send my pipe out then, a few days late.

Anyway, been quiet around here.... how's the authors coming?? Anyone got finished pictures they want to post??

Happy summer,
Jeremy.

I'm nearing the finish line on my third attempt, which is shaping up to the best of the three but not as much better than the other two as I'd hoped. Frustrated that it's still not as good as I wanted, so I'm feeling pretty author'ed out, TBH.

Yep, I'm into the finishing stages with my Author. Some design modifications left it a bit squatter and more muscular than I originally designed, but I think it turned out pretty decent for my first attempt at the shape.

Still need to do some last minute dialing in and finish sanding on the stem and then just the sandblasting and finish work on the stummel. I got the green light from a friend in the tool shop at my work to let me use their sandblasting cabinet on the DL. Seems like it'll get the job done but, having never used their blaster before, I'm not sure how the briar will react to their setup. I'll just have to take things slowly. One of these days I'll have an actual sandblaster of my own rather than relying on the good will of the nearest blasting cabinet owner.

I’m taking photos of all the processes and will post here and on fb. I’m finally not sick of making authors again!

My major piece of advice is to keep the stream moving. Concentrating the stream for any length of time results in a divot, especially where the grain is subtle or Birdseye . You might try a couple of practice pieces first. I have a couple of low grade Savinellis that I blasted for shits and giggles that I like much better now, but they did have some cavernous fills which blasted out very quickly.

I think it’s Finished. I don’t have a sand blaster nor have I used one. So it’s a smooth. To me it looks like it may be better blasted. But don’t really know.
