Making a stem on a wooden lathe

Post by Igipipes »

Hey guys, like the tittle says is it possible to make something good with just a chiesel? I am aiming to make one of about 10-15cm long. First time doing it though so I just wanted to ask and see if you can give me some pointers? Thanks!!!

The only thing I use is a wood lathe. It will take quite a bit of practice to be able to reliably turn a tenon with hand tools. I would suggest getting an Easy Wood Tools square cutter with the straight sides, not the radius. It'll make your tenon work a lot easier.

As far as turning the profile, just do it like you would any other spindle work. Sasquatch has a jig that he puts the stem into so he can turn between centers for the profile. I just turn the profile up about half the stem as the rest is in my 4 jaw chuck. You'll have to experiment to find out what works best for you.
Am I Calamity Jane or Annie Oakley??...depends on the day.

+1 on Scottie's comment.

I have the Robert Sorby equivalent.
