Works better than it looks, too. I used it for years before getting a Burr-King, and it is STILL my first choice for certain final shaping tasks.

And if it's all you have, playing around with grit, tension/slack (which affects contact area, aka "wrap-around"), and push-pressure, it works for everything except button detailing from round rod stock to 95% completed shape.

No reason it couldn't be used for some portions of bowl shaping as well.

At this stage in my pipe making career I'm looking for anything that can take strain off of my rapidly deteriorating wrists. This seems like it might help. Thanks for the great video, George!

I just now worked with it for a half hour, mindful of what muscles & joints got used, and wrists are low on the list. They stay pretty close to straight. It's actually relaxing in a workman-like way. Just rolling something in your fingers while doing an arm & shoulder rowing motion. Much lower forces all-round than bringing small cutting surfaces/tools to bear on the stock.

I like that idea a lot. I use a slack sander for a lot of what you use that for, but it gets my ideas flowing on solving some other specific problems. I never would have thought of this on my own. Thanks for sharing!
