I don't care for billiards pipes and I don't really want to make billiards pipes but I understand the collective wisdom of doing so. I've got some medium sized inexpensive grade 3 briar blocks in the mff shape and I'm planning on making some billiards as part of the learning process. I've only made a couple of pipes that fit any specific classic style and I'm finding that pictures and dimensions are good for copying but not perfect.

So, I'm thinking about buying a lower end production billiard as a physical model I can feel and measure. I don't want to spend much money on it since I probably won't smoke it. The question is, are there any low cost straight billiards out there that exemplify the classic shape? And if so, could you point me towards one.

There are some small changes that I personally would make, but overall this qualifies as "classic billiard" and should provide a decent example of the shape to hold and roll around in your hands.

Here's another one for a little more money - smooth and unencumbered by anything that might disrupt the lines.

Again, I might make some terribly small changes, but this is good, inexpensive example. If I was going to buy one of the two, I'd go for this one. The proportions are better suited to me.

Stem is nicer on the second, proportions probably better on the first (shank a bit heavy on that smooth) but the bowl shapes and "gist of it" are there for sure.

Thanks guys. Trying to keep it under $45 so may go for the first one but I do think a smooth would be better for copying as Kurt mentioned above.

My thoughts as well.

I think Stanwell makes nice traditional billiards as well. A bit more expensive but won't break the bank.

I bought a dunhill on eBay when I started. After a couple years of smoking it and using it as a study, I sold it for within $20 of what I paid for it. But a piece used with good market value and then resell it afterwards.
