Clueless but having fun

Post by LatakiaLover »

I've been making what I call "Hot Rod" pipes for myself lately, meaning re-stemming, re-drilling, re-shaping, and re-finishing "homeless" high grade stummels to suit my taste.

A friend of mine who has a lathe and makes pipes wanted me to take the next step, so spun me up what you see. Der Blockenzie Schtummel. I just now fitted it with a quality acrylic stem blank, and am trying to decide on a shape. (The chamber goes to within .30" of the bottom of the block, so anything Authorish is off the table.)

This is like Disneyland for a repairman. :D

Can't wait to see the finished product! By the way, were does one get a quality acrylic stem blanks?

Tim West. Ask for the "Machi stuff" (Macchi?) It's partially milled, accurately molded, durable, machines well, and finishes well.

Steve at Vermont Freedhand might carry the line (not sure), as might Premal at RawKrafted. I'm still working through the massive batch I got from Tim in the 2000's, so haven't kept up on who carries what among the newcomers.

I recommend categorically avoiding the glassy Italian lines. Crumbly, chippy, and snappy. Bad to work with and bad to own. (It's what gave acrylic a bad name in the PipeWorld)

A modern art gallery decided it evoked Picasso's cubist period and offered me fifty million dollars a year to just borrow it, and a billion to buy it outright.

Wudda ya thinka that, Mr. Smartypants?

I was thinking a new Wallenstein was in the making. Can't wait to see what you come up with.

A taste of the ole LL medicine for the man himself! Now watch him somehow go and actually pull it off.
