Cutting stainless steel tubing

Post by LatakiaLover »

Q for you lathe guys who mess with metal:

Can large-ish diameter ss tubing (17.5mm) be safely parted/cut on a lathe using a carbide tip, or would I be better off doing it caveman style? (clamping it to my porch railing, chopping it with an angle grinder, and dressing the cut ends on a belt sander)

If yes to a lathe, fast or slow?

Never mind.

I just remembered I have one of those screw-tigher-and-tighter rolling disk cutter thingies designed for the task.

They deform the cut edge a bit---turn it inward---but that's not a problem for me in this case.

You may now return to your regularly scheduled pipe making.

A deburring tool works well to fix that deformity from a pipe cutter, btw. I imagine you already have a million other tools sufficient to do the job though.

Well you have it sorted now but for other I would generally not recommend parting SS tubing on the lathe if you can help it. I do it for the 4mm stuff I use and it works out but I wouldn't like to do it on larger stuff. Cutting oversize with a saw, grinder or tube cutter and then either facing in the lathe or sanding is a much better option.

Yep, I use a tubing cutter and then have to dress the inside burr- usually with a small round file, occasionally with a diamond burr when I can find it.
