PITH 2020 Review

Post by Blackbeltpipes »

Hi all
I’m a team director by profession and I always try to standardize reviews for my teams for two reasons... so that they’re consistent and so that the info reviewed is positive and able to be used to grow. So here’s what I put together for feedback on the pipe I received and wondered if any experienced makers could weigh in on anything I’m missing that would be helpful to the maker who sent it to me. My goal is to be as informative as possible so that he has something to give him honest feedback where he can focus his efforts. I feel like he went through much attention and focus on this pipe that I want to give him something of value in regards to his work of art. I think my goal is to stay positive and just describe what i see and feel... he will know if he meant to do something different and that doesn’t necessarily need to be something I know. Let me know what you think...!

Describe your overall first impression...

Shape: Describe the shape... (ie. lines, curvature, adherence to standard shaping)

Balance: Describe your feeling of balance both visually and physically in the hand...

Bowl: Describe the bowl in terms of depth, finish, draught alignment, shape, thickness

Shank: Describe the shank in terms of shape, transition to bowl, length, mortise, facing

Stem: Describe the stem in terms of button shape, bite zone, thickness, clinch or hand held, slot, slot funnel, tenon, tenon fitment, length

Draught: Describe the draught... is it smooth, is the draw quiet, is the draught polished

Stem/Shank Junction: Describe the junction between stem and shank

Finish: Describe the finish in terms of texture (smooth, blasted, rusticated, mixed textures, transition lines) stain, color choices, surface appearance, polishing appearance

Smoking the Pipe: Describe your experiences in terms of draw, volume capacity of bowl, heat transfer, feel in hand, feel in bite, hang angle, balance on the lip/chin, the bit in the teeth, what way would you recommend this pipe be smoked (as it may differ from what intention of pipe was and could be helpful for maker to know)

Oh and if there’s something already for this I’m happy to use that but I didn’t see anything so I made this. Thanks for the assistance!
Jeff

This is a good idea.
The intent is similar to that of an after action report, but this is a detailed format that will cover a lot of the detail that a pipe maker needs as feedback.
I will attempt to follow this while evaluating my PITH when received.
Again, well done.

I printed this and am making my notes on the printed sheets,
You could re enter it with nicer/bigger spaces for notes.😀
I think that it can be a most useful tool to encourage and enlighten a newer pipe maker.
Again, thanks

Now, now, be kind. The paper was sitting loosely on my lap while I was writing.
Plus, I do have crappy handwriting.;) :) :)

Ha, I have crappy handwriting also, would probably improve if I had the paper setting loosely on my lap.

Forget crappy handwriting, many (most of?) today's kids can't write by hand at all. Cursive is effectively extinct, and even block printing is a chore.

Syntax, spelling, and grammer have also gone the way of the Ivory Billed Woodpecker.

How DO they communicate?

An update here. I got DocAitch’s pipe for this year’s PITH. It goes without saying that it is a beautiful pipe. However, the most striking aspect of his pipe is how well it smokes. With most of the pipes I’ve made you have to suck on them a little bit. I also have 8 or 10 average production pipes too. Comoys, etc. To a certain extent the same is true.

But with Doc’s pipe you just gently inhale and it draws like a dream. It is without a doubt the best drawing pipe I own. And that means it is the one I reach for almost every time.

On top of that, Doc shared with me how he does it. With that knowledge I hope never to make another pipe that “sucks”.

Doc, thanks for the pipe. And equally as valuable, thanks for the knowledge.

George.

George,
You are welcome. Glad the pipe is pleasing you.
