Oneway Chuck 2 Jaw modification

Post by ArtGuy »

Here is a site I cam across where a woodturner shows how he fashioned a pair of really nice sized wooden jaws for his oneway chuck.

Hey, that's not far off from what I made! Cool!

And if the video I shot over the weekend ever makes it into post-production, you can see it in action! :)

Yepper. I was going to make them out of steel, but I got impatient and tossed 'em together out of wood.

i see how the wood would be easier that the steel ones i made. however do you ever have any problems with the wood slipping while turning the bowl or shank i would think it would slip easier than the metal ones?

I stuck a wood screw in mine to hold the block. An idea stolen from Ken Lamb....

The idea is really simple, just add a wood screw to the side of the jaws to mark the airway and tobacco chamber intersection. That's coming at the stummel from the side.

If you look at this picture at Ken Lamb's site:
http://www.lambpipes.com/pipe6.jpg
you can see the screw at the top of the jaws. It's designed to allow for a pivot point when switching from airway/shank operations to tobacco chamber operations. It also has the benefit of helping secure the stummel against slippage.
