The pipe that got a second chance

This is a pipe I finished a couple of months ago. After that it sat in my pile (yes, they’re piling up awaiting my stamp [emoji38]) and as time went I became less and less happy about the result. Stain was a bit off, contrast didn’t pop and I found some uneven spots and bad lines that slipped through QA.

Yesterday I decided to resand and restain it, and boy am I happy that I did. First picture is before the rework.

In the second picture, there's a shadow/reflection line all the way along the shank and up the bowl, on the bottom. And that line actually presents a nicer proportion for the pipe, to my eye, a slightly thinner shank, a much smaller bowl, and the curve of the shank more appropriate given the line/curve you've presented with the top of the shank. I think the pipe looks heavy, and there's a promise of some action in the top curvature of the shank which is not echoed or followed up on in the bottom line.

The line created by the reflection is really interesting and definently creates a more classic shape. Maby something to explore in the future. I won’t give this pipe a third chance thou [emoji6]

No, it's not worth attacking again, and it's pretty good as is, just wanted to point out what I see as a discrepancy between the idea the top of the shank is presenting, and the actual pipe shape as provided by the bowl as is/where is.

And there's lot of other much more difficult stuff done well here, the saddle stem is flat and has good edges, it looks thin, the curve is lovely.

Haha, I know! I guess I just have to bite the bullet and try to find a good way to do it without ruining the rim.

I simply wrap a little sand paper around a pencil or a length of delrin and use that. Not the fastest, but works well.
