New pipe for me, new drilling video for everyone else

(I posted this on ASP, but am pasting it into some other forums as well since I think most people might find the drilling video fun)

I'm going to start this off with a proud gloat! We got a box of goodies from the US today - always a happy occasion, and today moreso than usual, because aside from getting chips (good), hot sauce (better), and popcorn (better yet), I also received a Christmas gift pipe. And what a pipe! I've posted a pic of the thing in today's blog entry here:

It is gorgeous - truly one of the best in my collection, and one I know I will smoke and enjoy for many a year to come. If I am never heard from again, you'll know I succumbed to the temptation of filling this thing with Black XX Rope for the first three hour bowl...

In other news, I have finally finished assembling the video of how I drill Talbert Briars, and it is now posted to our pipe blog here:

It's in two flavors, as usual - a 114 meg AVI and a 15 meg Real for those on slow connections. It is 16 minutes long, and covers the complete process of how I shape and drill pipes, from selecting a block to roughing it to creating the shape to drilling chamber and airhole. My method is something of an amalgamation of the techniques employed by the Danes and the French, and to my knowledge is unique. Hope you enjoy!

WOW! Somebody must really love you. That's an incredibly beautiful pipe, plus a Ser Jacopo to boot. My personal preference is for bent pipes, including Calabash Gourds, of which I have three, so I can appreciate your new aquisition. It is beautifully carved and looks to be about the same size as a genuine calabash gourd.

Many thanks for the shaping/drilling video. For newbies like myself it is a wealth of instruction. As the saying goes, if "a picture is worth a thousand words", then your video is an instructional text book. Not forgetting to mention the "Seahorse" pipe itself, truly a work of art. The artistry of shape and bringing out the grain that goes into a handmade pipe is what drew my interest to the subject in the first place.

Fantanstic video Trever! Bravo and thanks! Congrats on the Christmas gift too! It's beautiful--what I don't understand is how the heck is that thing drilled--never have understood the engineering of a Calabash type shape. Mainly because I've never been able to hold one in my hot little hands to examine.

Thanks for taking the time to create the video. Very helpful to see your process. I was impressed by your drilling approach for the mortise and air holes. You virtually do that "free hand" with the pipe just touching the pin. Pretty impressive.

How do you encode the video in the AVI file?
My Quicktime will no decode it.
I'm not too savvy about such things.

I'm not sure if you want to take the time to learn, but this is the forum where I learned about video editing: http://forums.afterdawn.com/.

You'll find loads of info, plus links to sites with free video decoding/encoding/conversion software.

Thanks for the video...it was great! I had heard Todd talk about the epoxy drops before, but this is the first time seeing it demonstrated. Thanks! You are an awesome craftsman and a heck of a nice guy!

If you try to open the video using Windows Media Player it should work just fine.

It's encoded using the DiVX 4.1.2 compression codec - Windows Media Player supports this, as do most players that are able to download missing codecs. Try playing it in a couple of other media players and see if you hit one that works.

Fellow Mac users will have to go to http://www.divx.com to get the coded so that quicktime will play it. Windows Media Player for OS X won't play this either - until you install that DiVX codec.

I could not get Windows Media player to play this in Windows... it errored out when downloading the codec. I had to download and install the DIVX player. That worked for me.

That pipe is probably the greatest pipe I have ever seen in my life!

Just as a sideline hint for mac users:
Installing the DIVx fromthe website mentioned somehow bugs the startup of your classic environment under OSX. I did not try any other way yet, but it took me some time to research the reason for that non working classic. It is documented and no "sloppy user installation fault".

Mac users can also grab 3vix codecs, and get Divx playback capability. That just occurred to me.
