How about a PITH?

Post by KurtHuhn »

AKA: Pipe In The Hat

I was reading a knifemaking BB recently and saw a couple threads on a KITH (Knife In The Hat). Basically, the participants make a knife, everyone's name goes onto a list, and the knives get exchanged between makers.

This post seems to explain the process pretty well, so I won't rehash words or reinvent the wheel explaining it:
http://www.knifenetwork.com/forum/showp ... stcount=15

I figure we could do it exactly the same way, we'll keep a list of participants in the order they joined the PITH, and you send a pipe to the guy below you in the list, and the last guy on the list sends to the first. Think of it as the ultimate in learning exercises - and a chance to have your pipe critiqued in person by a fellow pipe lover.

Anyone want to participate? Anyone have a suggestion for a deadline for joining the PITH?

Here, I'll start the list with my name and add on from there:

I'll throw my name in on the list. I could use the criticism but I feel sorry for the guy below me. :(

Thanks Steve--I just want someone to have a nice pipe--I let the slot get a little tall on this one so the bit ended up thicker than I wanted so whoever gets it may not like it anyway (I think it's like .180 or so) If anyone is interested in working out a trade for another one of my pipes please let me know.

Wow, Dave! Incredible looking pipe!

I can't decide if I want to keep the PITH pipe a surprise for the recipient, or if I want to show it off. I will say that it has a bamboo shank. :)

I'd really like to see more folks joining in the PITH. Don't be afraid to toss in because you think your work won't meet standards - think of it as reason to push yourself to the next level. I can't imagine anyone not appreciating the amount of work poured into something made by hand.

Any ideas for cutoff date for joining in?

Thanks Kurt! :D My hope is by showing the pipe I'm putting in the hat more people will join in--hopefully it doesn't drive them off! :(

Cutoff date... I'm not sure. New Year's day or maybe a week after?

I agree with Dave on the cutoff date. That way I have time to get another pipe knocked out, hopefully.

Hey, Ben

Feel free to join in! As much as I want that pipe from Dave, I'd rather see folks join up. The cutoff date for *joining* is the first of the year. We haven't come up with a drop-dead date for sending pipes out.

So did there end up just being the 6 of us? Steve, did you join or just comment on the pipe?

I'd say it's probably safe to close the PITH now, unless anyone knows someone who wants to join in. But for all intents, I think we can call it 6 people.

Now get cracking on those pipes, guys! :thumb:

Kurt,
Just to make sure--I mail my pipe to Ben? That's the way I understand it but I just want to make sure.

Correct. Send you pipe to the guy below you in the list, the last guy in the list sends to the first.

Just for reference, the list is:
Kurt
Bryan
Nick
Josh
Dave
Ben

Bryan, PM me with your addy and I'll get your pipe out to you this week.

Ben,
You should receive your pipe early next week. Please let me know when it gets there and how it smokes--that's what I really want to hear feedback on. Thanks.
Dave
