tung oil

Post by damtender »

Has anyone ever tried tung oil as a finish? I have used it several times on gun stocks with good results (lots of work) and wondered if it would produce a good briar finish. Jon

I'd be concerned because it a film forming finish. Not what you ususally want on a pipe. Also most tung oil has a lot of adulterants. I prefer plain vegetable oil. Gun stocks are different - they need to be as inert as possible to keep the point of impact from shifting. The goal is to build a thick film on the wood. If that's what you want varnish is better. Vanrnish can bubble depending on type.
