Basically, it is a plastic substance that is stronger and more forgiving than vulcanite. It makes for strong tenons and is less prone to breaking. Not to mention that, from my experience making tenons with it, it is less sensitive to temperature changes. I have been really pleased using it. It is too soft though for making entire stems. Oh, one other thing, it is pretty cheap. I think I purchased about 5 different sizes in various diameters from 1/4" to 1/2" each in 5ft pieces, total I think I paid about $15. I purchased mine from McMaster-Carr (www.mcmaster.com). I think you can get it a couple different places. Another site I have heard about it www.onlinemetals.com.
