Image this is my first stab at pipe making. I haven't got a clue on how to make it better to see.

What I can see it looks like your first stab is a good one! Look forward to seeing some bigger pics if you can get them.

I usually use something in the size of about 500 pixels wide, seems to make a decent sized presentation.

Miles, get a nice-sized image and upload it to the forum gallery (see the menu at the left of your screen; I think there are how-to directions there). Get the url there and post it just as you did the thumnbnail above. Am interested/intrigued by the band at the stem/shank juncture; not many start off with something like that.
