I see if I use stabilized woods that i can make bands and rings and such but has anyone ever used anything else from the wood family for complete stems? I know cocobolo has a very high resistance to absorbing liquid as does african blackwood. You cant even trust gorilla glue to join this stuff. Judging from the posts, the only concern on the stem is that it shouldn't be able to absord the tar.

Maple, Ash, Oak, and Poplar all work really well for stems when used on churchwardens in the style of "hobbit pipes".
