Brief interview with a new ebonite supplier

Post by TreverT »

I just posted a brief interview I did with a new ebonite supplier to my blog. These folks are actually not "new", they're experienced in the biz, but are starting off on their own with their own company now. I've included contact info for them if anyone is interested. I've already tried their stem rod and it is excellent in quality, plus they are very responsive to work with. And no, I am not affiliated with them in any way - just passing on some potentially interesting news of a new supplier. Read the article and see pics here:

Wow, that's exciting new Trever. Thanks for sharing.

I wrote them for a sample, and if I get some I'll review the material on this and my instruction site. I'm anxious to see how this stuff stacks up compared to the stuff from Hamburg.

Love,

Is the smell while working the ebonite the same as the Hamburg stuff? (Just as a very rough measure of sulfur content.)

Have you made a stem for yourself to smoke to test hardness and tendency to oxidize?

This sounds promising!

Tyler

The smell is about the same rotten eggs :D

mabey just slightly harder but not so that it is disturbing and not as hard as the japaneese ebonite..it polishes a bit easyer IMO... as for oxidation I made the first stem two and a half weeks ago so thats yet to see..

These guys used to work for New-your hamburger and they do seem to know their stuff...

I also sent them an email asking for a price list. I'm running out of cumberland at the moment, and could use more ebonite, so I'll probably be working up an order in a couple months if they quality of their stuff is good.

Love, I'm happy hear it seems slightly harder. I've always thought the Hamburg stuff was too soft, but figured I was just being naive about the properties of ebonite.

Kurt, let me know when you are going to order. I'd like to get a few rods as well and it will help them if we do a group buy.

Kurt,
I will probably be in for some ebonite rods also as soon as you or Tyler post some prices. Since you are running low on cumberland I also would not mind going in for some when you stock back up.

Yes, this looks really great! I also have samples on the way. I'm interested in a group order too. They charge a fee of 25 euros (approximately $33 USD) for orders of under 100 rods, so we would save a bit there, as well as help them out on ordering together instead of all the little orders.

I also have a price list in Euros they sent me. I asked, and they don't have Cumberland yet, but they will in about two weeks. Here are the prices in Euros for black from their price list:

Rod Legnth is 1M (39.37 inches).

Diameter --------- Raw ---------- Smoothed
--------------------------------------------
18mm ------------ 10,00 ---------- 13,00
20mm ----------- 12,00 ---------- 16,00
22mm ----------- 13,00 ---------- 17,00
24mm ----------- 14,00 ---------- 18,00

Great prices, and looks like excellent material! Google says the conversion is something like $1.313 USD per 1 euro.

It's wonderful to have some options!

Scott,

Those are some great looking prices indeed. If you get together a large order, keep me in mind I would like to go in on it.

Did you get any pictures that show the difference between Raw and Smoothed? Its turned down anyway, so I wonder if the raw is good enough? Which are you going to order?

Smooted is polished raw is what you would usually get as a pipemaker because you are going to work the rod it is unnessesary to pay extra for it to be polished

I think I would prefer smoothed as well. Raw wouldn't run very true in the lathe chuck.
