kurt's pipe used in the stem photo essay

kurt's pipe that he used in the stem making photo essay is on his web site and it is one nice looking pipe.

and he says that he shaped first and drilled second.

OK question kurt on squaring the shank how did you do it.

parting tool on wood lathe
fornstner bit hand held
sandpaper on very flat surface

Thanks Jim. I used the Todd Johnson method for drilling after shaping. Once the mortis was drilled, I chucked a piece of 5/16" steel stock in the headstock, and slipped the mortis onto it. Then I used the tailstock with a rotating center to steady the other side, much like you would if you were turning a spindle. After that, I set teh lathe to it's slowest speed (which is is still too fast for my comfort at 550RPM) and used a freshly sharpened parting tool to square the shank face.
