Drilling the Mortise

I've decided to try and make a slightly bent pipe. However I am having trouble grasping the concept of drilling the mortise. I know I'm probably over thinking it.

So I want the draught hole to be in the bottom of the Mortise hole. However by doing this it would seem that the draught hole entrance might be exposed. Is the trick to just use angles that are close so the mortise hole cuts out the draught hole?

I found a lot of tutorials explaining how to do it but I cant seem to grasp it for some reason.

Even looking at the drawing for the pipemakersforum, it looks like the draught hole will be outside the mortise.

For bent pipes, it is easier to drill the mortise first, then the air hole. With the mortise in place, you can place and angle the air hole to best advantage, striving to keep the start as nearly in the center of the mortise end as possible.

I hadn't thought of trying that. I've been learning from tylerlanepipes.com and it talks about drilling the air hole first. I'll give the mortise hole first a try.

Unless it's a straight pipe, I always drill the mortise first.

Keeping in mind that the drawing was tossed together in about 20 second flat, it's still fairly accurate. To get certain bends and shapes, the airway can certainly notch the mortis - which isn't ever a bad thing unless the face of the shank will be showing.
