I have a chance to pick up a old Garvin Machine Company lathe. It is a 36'' Garvin Machine Company, for fabricating metal, w/attached cast iron stand, includes 1hp, 120 volt 1 phase motor, also assorted chucks & cutting bits. I believe it has a 10" swing at least. The lady wants 350.00 bucks for it and I have seen it run. It uses a flat leather belt drive and appears to run very smooth. Sound like a good deal?

If you can post a pic or two, Jack will very likely be able to advise.

I'd say almost any running lathe that has been well kept is worth $350, but it's hard to judge either condition or suitability without seeing pictures. The Garvin lathes in the link above are obviously old. Old isn't bad so long as you can make the lathe turn the speed you need.

Here's a Garvin on ebay:

Who knows? From looking at the lathe, how it runs, and what sort of tooling is with it, you probably have a pretty good feeling about whether you can use it or not.
