Mahogany Pipe ?

Post by Spence Pipes »

Can Mahogany be used for making a pipe? I picked some up from a local guitar making shop and thought I'd play around with some of it.

I think the problem is with identifying the wood you have. A lot of different woods are labeled Philippine Mahogany, but is not really mahogany at all. I used to have a wooden boat and needed to get rid of the older planks, I was going to burn them up. My friend told me the smoke from mahogany was toxic. Due to the resines in the wood. I don't think I would mess with it. I still have a lot of odds and ends around. I will not use it in my wood burning BBQ nor make a pipe out of it. The wood I was able to get seemed rather soft, too soft think for pipes. Tampers, humidor, pipe stand...now that's what mahogany is for! Beautiful wood.
