Talking about his again renewed my interest in getting this thing rolling. I've come up a couple themes above that we can vote on for the final theme. I've built on a couple suggestions from the last time, and added a couple as well. I tried to use theme ideas that are sufficiently abstract, as well as one of the more difficult "simple" shapes there is to do well.

The voting is open for 10 days, and if I did this right, will end 12/11/2009.

Lets set a date for completion for 1/31/2010. That's two months from now, and should be enough time to get your contribution finished - and is after the holidays so as not to interfere.

Around these parts, the KITH evolved from an IITH (Iron In The Hat), where projects were kept very simple (arrowheard for example) to encourage participation.

In the end, a KITH is about community. It represents a challenge to new makers to do their very best work because they are sending it to someone who knows knives as well or better than they do. An honest critique can be a blow to a sensitive ego, but worth so very much in the development of a maker. For the ol' masters, it represents a chance to share years of accumulated knowledge and wisdom. For all, it represents a sense of brotherhood, sharing, and belonging.

To reiterate from my post of last time:
It doesn't matter if you've been carving for 5 years or 5 weeks, you should feel welcome to participate. If a pro or semi-pro joins in, he does so eyes wide open, and with the knowledge that he may get the work of a total noob. Maybe he's feeling as if this is some way he can give back to the community from which he learned, or perhaps he's trying to foster the continued presence of talented pipe carvers from around the world. Whatever the reasons, please don't be intimidated by it - the goal is to get folks learning, collaborating, and, most of all, establishing lasting relationships in this brotherhood. All forum members are welcome to join!

Keep in mind, you are sending your pipe away forever - this is a trade. In return you get a shiny new pipe for yourself.

And speaking of joining in - the cutoff date for joining in is 1/22/2010. This is only for the peace of mind of the organizer (me).

I ordered some briar from Tim West yesterday, and he said he may do this. Someone go pressure him into it

looks like the voting has ended. There are 14 replies to the post, but 21 votes. Am I correct in assuming there are 14 people participating? Reguardless, should I start making a nosewarmer? When we do exchange pipes, do we then post them somewhere on the forum for critique?

I'm one of the guilty. I voted and then realized that I probably wouldn't have the time to invest, so I've held off on entering. My vote didn't make the cut though. But I think I've got time to swing it, so I'll take a stab at it. I wasn't terribly excited that nosewarmer won, but now that I've been thinking about it and looking at nosewarmers, I think it'll be fun and a good experience to make something I normally wouldn't consider making.

Alright! That's it, folks - the theme is nosewarmer.

The overall shape can be whatever you feel comfortable making, so you can base your nosewarmer on any catalog shape, or make up something entirely new. Push your boundaries, and work outside your comfort zone a little.

Feel free to post pictures to this thread as you make the pipe and come up with the finished result. The goal is to get good, honest, useful feedback to help you grow as a pipe maker and learn to develop your skills and artistic eye. All the reviews may not be glowing, but you should try to take them in the spirit they are given, as well in the context of who they come from - fellow pipe enthusiasts and artisans.

Anyone and everyone is welcome, even if you didn't join the voting. However, you must post here that you are participating, and the last day for joining is 01/22/2010.

When you join, please keep in mind that the deadline for completion is 01/31/2010. For the sake of fairness, please ensure that you are able to complete your contribution by then. If you are unable to complete in time, please let us know so that your name can be removed from the list.

On 01/23/2010 I will compile the list of everyone who's in and draw names randomly. The resulting order will be the exchange order, and each person will send their pipe to the person below them on the list, with the last person on the list sending to the first.
