Dropped a note to Anne Julie the otherday

Post by Nick »

Telling her how much I enjoy her work and showing her the calla lilly pipe which was inspired by her pipes. Well, she replied back. Sayin she liked the shape as well as offering to answer any questions I had. Not only that, but she's sending me an signed copy of her book.

Too cool!

Anne Julie is a brilliant artist and a wonderful person. Your story doesn't surprise me in the least. She is really great. Not only that, but there are few people alive who have seen or done more in the realm of pipes than Anne Julie, so you could scarcely find a better pipemaking resource.

Best,

Todd

Yep, she seems like a wonderful lady. She even dropped a few goodies - a card or two I think - in the package for my girls, which I happen to mention in my note. Her paintings are gorgeous. I love the clown series. Too cool.

D'OOH! Forgot the link to her book

Yea, that was me. The pipe is wonderfully executed. It is light, yet can hold a good deal of tobacco. Very slim walls and a tall nrrow bowl. The drilling is right on. The stem left a bit to be desired. Not sure whether there was excessive build up inside or it was just narrow, but it was sometimes a chore to get a cleaner through it. I ended up having the stem replaced because it was a bit thick for me, plus the fact that I cracked the thing when I tried to cram a drill bit through it. Duuuhhh - it'll go faster if I push really hard!

Not too much grain to it really. but it smokes extremely well. It's my long smoke for Va flakes.

Here's a pic:http://www.pipecrafter.com/images/AJ-new.jpg

BTW: our own inimitable Kurt Huhn is the one who replaced the stem. I get the pipe back at the show tommorow.

He also did a tricky stem replacement on a blowfish I had, and looks like he did a terrific job

here are those pics:

It doesn't show all that well in the pic, but the stem was anything but your standard round shape.

You said it! The pipe is probably smaller than you think though. Its a bit on the short side, measuring about five inches. Maybe a bit less. Still, its a nice long smoke. Especially with flakes as its dedicated too.
