most common mortise and draught hole bit size

Post by sean »

I am about to venture into drilling my own blocks, and was wondering what the most common mortise and draught hole bit size are as I am trying to keep costs down and only want to start out buying a few. Also is the tenon the same size as the mortise diameter? I would love to know where everyone got their bits from: online, woodcraft, local hardware, pimo, jhlowe?

I will be doing this on a Lathe.

Thanks for any help,

The most common mortise sizes ar 9/32" and 5/16". Sometimes 3/8" on a large pipe. You have to machine the tenon to fit the mortise. One size does not fit all.

The most common draught hole sizes are 5/32" or 4mm.

I get my bits at Ace Hardware.

Wait, I thought every pipe making tool had to be a crazy expensive custom job that has been magically imbued with Danish essence. Is Ace selling those types of tools now?

In related news, I have a custom made, Danish infused pipe drill bit for sale. I'm only asking $5,000 for it. PM me for details. Serious inquiries only. :p
