long belt sander

where can I get a long belt sander with no backing for light sanding stummles? Or does anyone have an idea how to build one? I need it to be 2" wide by warever tall thanx Bob Clark

I picked one of these up not too long ago, and I've been pretty happy with it so far--especially considering that it is much cheaper than a lot of other options.

In the photo it has a backing plate, but it's easy to move it back out of the way or remove it completely.

For stummels you will need to have one specially built with a frequency modulator or similar meens to contoll speed and it ain't cheap ...

I'll second this suggestion. If you want to do slack belt sanding of stummels that's probably the best ready-made tool you're going to find. Just be sure to get a DC motor (or 3-phase AC) and speed control to run the thing so that you can slow the belt *way* down, otherwise you're going to burn the shit out of your hands.

Beyond that, if you have any welding skills at all, and the ability to lay stuff out and measure twice, you can build a grinder for very short money - especially if you use scrap steel to put it all together. Slightly more expensive, but still affordable, is some bolt-together designs - all of which can be adapted for slack-belt sanding.

Whatever you do, don't get one of these. It's utter crap:

You could possibly use a 1x42 sander with some patience, and perhaps some modification, but that belt still spins way fast. If you replace the belt or motor pulley you could slow it down quite a bit.

Another word of warning - some knife makers use these:

This spins way fast, and is not well suited to your purposes at all.

Some time ago (OK, maybe WAY back) there was a post on the system that Rainer Barbi uses. Anybody uses the same type thing or know of anybody that does? I got hold of a couple of nice long wide belts, have a motor with +- 450rpm and was wondering if it is worth the while to try and build/swear/modify something myself?

Here is a similar belt sander that I copied from pictures posted in forum way back. The only true costs were the nuts and bolts, the wheels, the rod and the...not sure what they are called, but they hold the rod in place.

Great stuff! Exactly what I was thinking of Tano! What rpm does the motor have and the HP?

The motor is rated at 1750 rpm but I beleive that if you put a large pulley in front it slows it down quite a bit.
I experience no issues with it especially finger burns.

I use cheaper version of this, sold by Harbor Frieght for $29, to do just about everything.

The Grizzly 1015 so called knife sander is too fast to properly use for knife work. Especially if you spend the extra bucks for the larger contact wheel.
