Order of the Purpleheart Pipe

Post by SimeonTurner »

Hey gang-

I thought I would share this pipe with everyone, as it has a neat story to go with it.

Over on another forum, there is a member who was stationed over in the Middle East, and he was unfortunately hit with an IED on Monday last week. Luckily he survived, but he had some pretty significant injuries to his legs. Long story short, he ended up getting sent to Germany where he is now in a military hospital recovering. He got the Purple Heart awarded to him late last week.

His biggest complaint, other than having major leg injuries, is that they blew up his only "good" pipe, which he had purchased when he was at Ft. Benning, and had brought with him to Iraq and Afghanistan. He sounded pretty bummed about having his favorite/best pipe blown up. I think it was pretty much a no brainer to offer to make him a free pipe to honor his service and his injury. So, I made him a pipe which includes a purpleheart shank extension (thanks to a brilliant suggestion from Mr. Houser), and I'll be shipping it to him in Germany later this week. I stamped it with the date of his injury. Here's a couple of shots I took with my iPhone this afternoon....better pics to come when I can get a legit photo shoot done.

Well, that's a real nice pipe and a real nice gesture.

Actually, I'm mostly just glad that you didn't make a pipe out of Purpleheart, which is basically toxic garbage.

I've just negotiated* a deal which will see a pipe waiting at home for an American Serviceman too. I'm not gonna wax political here but I feel like it's an important mission.

Beautiful pipe, Simeon,
Love the purpleheart extension and the engraved date idea. Very nice gesture. Very nice pipe.

Bless you for taking a moment to treat a service man for taking care of us.

As for the purple heart, is there a tenon of briar going through it or does the smoke come in contact with the purple heart?

The delrin tenon of the stem bottoms out at a delrin tenon inside the extension, so there should be no smoke contact with the purpleheart. :)
