Sharpening Wheel Question

Post by tigercasual »

Now that I have a grinder (one with 6" wheels), I'm trying to get a consensus on which wheel would be the best for me to sharpen my lathe tools.

Suggestions?

Thanks,

Good luck with that. :D

I use white wheels, but I don't remember what grit they are - 80 and 120, I think.

I don't do that much reshaping, but when I do, it takes a bit longer than it would with a coarser wheel.

Personally I prefer a grinding belt at about 220 to freshen edges.

That's just me though, and I'm a weirdo. :D

If I were to use a bench grinder, I would probably opt for 80 and 120 grit wheels. 80 to set the edge, and 120 to freshen the edge between turnings. I would also opt for the white or pink friable wheels.
