Oh no! Not another lathe question!
Oh no! Not another lathe question!
But yes, here's another one....
I'm planing to buy a lathe end of April. My budget and my working space will be a bit tight. I've been reading, searching the web, reading again and search again and I have to tell you. I'm confused. I just want someone to point me in the right direction and say:"this is the lathe you need". And since no one ever did that, here's what I came up with.

The thing is, as of today, I think I will mainly use it to make stems and the occasional bulldog. I really like shaping on the sanding disc. So, would this be a good enough lathe to use for pipe making?
All the best,
Pär

Does'nt look big enough to turn blocks, looks good for stems. You really need two. Look around there out there rather inexpensive.

If you can afford it, a few guys have this:

Re: Oh no! Not another lathe question!
Pär, I think that little lathe you are looking at would work BUT it's very small. It's so small that by the time you get a big chuck on one end, and a stummel in there, and a Jacobs chuck on the other end and a bit for the chamber in that.... you'll be all out of room!
Can you make pipes on that thing? Sure. But it's gonna be awful tight.
If this is just a hobby for you, then a small lathe is better than no lathe, but if you want to be able to do some cool stuff, then I think a bigger lathe is going to make you a lot happier in the long run. But I understand the difference between 500 rubles and 1500 rubles too.

Re: Oh no! Not another lathe question!
Well thats not far off the size of lathe I have and Larrysson uses. The clarke is a 3.5" lathe same as a Myford Super7, the Myford is a little more powerful and longer buts thats all.
Re: Oh no! Not another lathe question!
Hi Pär,
that thingy will work, but 300 mm between centers is really not much... besides from that, shipping from UK to Germany cannot be cheap - and You will find the very same thing from China, painted in another color and with another name on it ("Red & Black", "Bernardo","Rotwerk" etc.) in Germany as well.
eMarkle is right about what you need, but if You can't afford that, take at least the next bigger one to the one you selected: http://www.westec-tools.de/Drehmaschine ... -1333.html, offering 50 mm of extra distance between centers - every little bit counts ...

Re: Oh no! Not another lathe question!
it is a one of many clones of chinese DIY 0714DaGamba wrote:http://www.chronos.ltd.uk/acatalog/copy ... ories.html
in Germany also known as http://www.einhell.com/scripts/products ... |2914|2270
i use a similar lathe, but with russian TM
it is slightly too small for stummels, but with nova chuck may well be used
p.s. so if I had a bigger workshop, I would purchase bigger lathe. yeah, like BD920
Re: Oh no! Not another lathe question!
Thanks a lot guys.
And thanks Jens. I was thinking about exactly that machine. Found it at amazon for 999 euro. So your link is of course much better.
Sorry, no. The one I found on amazon was the model bigger....

Re: Oh no! Not another lathe question!
Exactly that one, Jens.
I wonder what the difference between this one and the Jet lathe is?

Re: Oh no! Not another lathe question!
This one has a gearbox with two handles to operate it, the jet works with belt and pulleys. This one will make it easier to change speed, the jet will produce less noise.
