TiN Coating on Drill Bits
Hey Guys,
Ever on the quest to try new drill bits, I realized that I've never used TiN coated bits before and was wondering if anyone out there has. If so do you recommend them... and why/why not.
Cheers,
TC

Coatings on drill bits matter in no way at all compared to how important it is that they are cut well, and most are not. Look at the tips of the bits and see how evenly sharpened they are. Both sides should be identical with well defined straight bevels. The difference between and 20 dollar and 200 dollar set of bits is that the steel is better quality and the sharpening is proper. Whether they are yellow, silver, or black.... doesn't matter one whit in my opinion.

Todd is right. Quality is more important than fancy coatings. I buy my drill bits induvidually rather than in sets, that way i can buy a suitable quality for that job. Roughing out of the tobacco chamber for example only needs a cheap bit, cutting a mortise or airway however requires a much better drill bit. I have had good success with Hertel and Guerhing bits.

I do not like coatings on bits. Sometimes I don't have a choice, like for my SD bits for tobacco chambers, but by and large I purchase bright, uncoated bits. I routinely find them to cut better and last longer than coated bits.

Thanks Guys!

If you really want to get crazy, putting a little linseed oil on a bit will make it slide like hell in briar. This helps with clearing chips too. When I drill an airway now I wipe a little linseed oil on the bit almost every time.*

I dated a girl once who had a certain Wessonality. She was definitely poisonous (good call, Sas).

I've always known that Florence Henderson was a freak. I've even had chance to see interviews in which she alluded to the 60's freakscene that she was into.

Sorry to derail you perverts, but, I think the best drill bits are HSS, not stainless, or plated in any way...
