Hi All,
My "day job" is that I have a leather shop. One of the things I have been toying with is making some pipe bags but I am not sure which direction to go with them. So, what do you all like in a pipe bag? Do you like a "mega" bag that holds bunches of pipes, tools tobacco, etc., or just a small bag that hold a couple of pipes, or, maybe you like that camera bag you got at a garrage sale? Either way, I would love to hear your thoughts.
Thanks,
Jim

Re: Pipe Bags
I have a 2/4 bag from Neil Flancbaum that I love. I've also considered getting a 1/2 bag of some kind since a make a fair number of overnight trips, and something like that would fit nicely in my duffel.
I like my bags to be lean and well organized. A place for pipes, a tamper, pipe cleaners, a lighter or matches, and enough tobacco for two days.

Re: Pipe Bags
A few thoughts...There's probably a lot more money per bag in making bags for pipe smokers, like the bag Kurt described, but if you were making bags for pipe makers, I would keep it simple, just room enough for one pipe, a few sizes like 3" x 6," 4" x 8" and 5" x 9" and you might make them to order..length, width, color, leather type, and posibly overall design choices...draw string, flap, etc.
This dealer represents a lot of high-grade pipemakers, and when you click in and look at the pipes, the last image typically shows the pipe bag included with the pipe. You may have seen it...

I like variety when I smoke so room for multiple tins is key. Space for 4-6 pipes works fine.
How much do you charge for pipe socks?

I think some definitions may be in order Mike. A 'pipe bag' typically means a satchel sort of affair with room for a few pipes and accessories. A 'pipe sock' is a sleeve to protect an individual pipe.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the replies. This is really helpful, keep 'em commin'. What got me started on this was that most of my favorite pipes are freehands and don't fit in the majority of commercially available bags. Try putting a full bent elephant foot in one of those oversized pen loops they provide! I design and make everything from scratch so it's not a problem to acomodate different needs but it is really helpful to get an idea about where to start.

That would depend on quantity and leather. For just one or two, leather would be limited to what I have on hand and cost $12.00ea. Stamping would be extra. For five to ten the price would drop to $10.00ea and include a single line stamping. For over ten the price would drop to $8.00ea and include 2 line stamping.e Markle wrote:...How much do you charge for pipe socks?

Thanks, Kurt. Yes, I do make scabbards, I think I have 3 or 4 shown on the Old West Holsters site. I'm making a Medieval one now for a reenactor ( not SCA).KurtHuhn wrote:Nice work! Do you make knife sheaths as well?
