If you have a press like this without the ratchet mechanism for the table you can fit a longer tube.

Harbor Freight carries a drill press stretcher. Just ask them and they will direct you to it.

Not entirely correct Kurt, I bought a Quantum drill press (the B16 model) last year, but found the column wasn't high enough to use a decent vice and still have room for a spade bit.

I sent out the column, which was pressed into a mount with 3 holes (to screw the entire thing to the base of the drill press), to a friend of mine. He sent it along with one of his industrial orders and had the mount removed.
He then had the mount pressed onto a new column which is about 30cm (1ft) heigher than the old one.

Result: I now have a drill press 30cm heigher than the original model. The only thing it cost me was another yellow adjustment ring which moves the entire ratches system up and down the column.

But for normal people without fancy industrial machinery, it's impossible...

I know, I'm one of them "folks", which is why I contacted someone who DOES have money to mod my drill press...
