Southbend 9 a near me....thoughts?

Post by Tyler »

I never see used lathes nearby, and this one is tempting.

Thoughts?

That lathe is extremely well equipped for the price. Assuming it runs true, hasn't suffered a crash, and is overall in working order, I'd be ready to buy it. The fact that it has collets and a closer is extremely nice. Definitely check it out!

I've got an email into the guy...he didn't post a phone number.

The only gotcha is he's about 200 miles away -- close in Texas terms. It'd cost me about $80 in gas to go see it.

You have a SB 9, right Kurt? If so, whats the diameter through the headstock?

Yes - I've got a SB 9" model C (change gear, no gearbox). The spindle is a hair over 3/4", so that you can pass 3/4" stock through it. I'd love to get a quick change gearbox lathe - changing gears every time I want different threads is a pain in the butt.

If you can afford it, you might get a lot of your money back just selling the lever collet closer. Pretty rare on a 9". Collets won't be that useful for stems, as the biggest 3C is about 1/2". Looks nice, though. Hard to see how worn it is from the photos, but a pretty good price for a model A even without the closer, which is special.
