I've been trying to find out how fitted pipe cases are made.
Here is an example of what I'm talking about..
Is it a kind of cardboard core? With liner and leather-ish material glued onto it?
Does anyone know?
Thanks!
How to make fitted pipe cases??

Basically, yes. Papier maché, I guess ...meathod wrote:Is it a kind of cardboard core? With liner and leather-ish material glued onto it?

Resurrecting an old thread here.
I'd really like to try this to make matching pipes in a case like Dunhill does on occasion:

I've got a plan to line a Tupperware container with thin leather and put a layer of paper mache underneath that. Once the paper mache has dried I was thinking of doing something like this:

Do the same for the lid and attach the two with craft hinges.
Any thoughts?

You may be able to find some unfinished wooden boxes at a craft store like Joann Fabrics that would be the right size.
Finish the outside of the box and do the inside with foam. Once the foam has dried you could use spray adhesive and felt or some other fabric to line the inside.
Maybe wrap the pipe tightly in plastic wrap prior to molding. (One would have to do a test to make sure that the plastic wrap doesn't dissolve in the foam... )
If you want to make a fitted leather case you can use vegetable tanned leather. Soak the leather in water overnight to soften it. Then wrap your pipe in plastic wrap and stretch the leather over it and clamp it down. Wet leather is pliable and will stretch, so it form fits whatever you want. The next morning, when the leather is dry it will hold whatever shape it dried in.
Just some thoughts...

Here's a nice pictorial on making a fitted gun case using foam. I imagine you could use the same method, then cover the foam with leather to achieve the look you're after. Just a thought.
