Making a stem with an offset airhole

I just posted a photo-essay on our blog about how to make a stem with an airhole that does NOT sit at the center of the tenon bottom, for whoever might be interested. I developed this trick some years back to handle pipe shapes where the angles were such that it was literally impossible to make the shape with a straight airhole without moving it off-center from the bottom of the mortise.

Cool, thanks Trever! I think there was a discussion about this some time ago where you described the procedure; it's nice to have a pictorial guide. I also enjoyed comicbook Trever guiding us through the process.

Yes I felt like Rex Morgan M.D. was guiding me through the pictures. I haven't felt as sure-footed in years.

Now that I have the handy templates in Photoshop, comicbook Trever wil probably be making frequent appearances. 8) To a certain extent, I am specifically aiming at a youth market because that's where the future of the pipe biz is - People who have grown up with the web, with comics and graphic novels and videogames, and are accustomed to understanding things via visual representation rather than long blocks of text.

Also, I am totally lazy and it is easier for me to put together a comic photo spread than to write technical descriptions for paragraph after paragraph.

I'm just curious as to which side comicbook Trever was on during Secret Wars....

I was too old for comics by then, alas. Though I did bobble back in as the medium grew up a bit. Currently rereading Dave McKean's "Cages" at the moment, as it happens. It's good practice for the web comic ideas I'm slowly evolving for my Kentucky Fried Popcorn site.
