I'm thinking this semi-bent, and a big oom paul. I like the horn idea though, got any rough sketches?

Geez I haven't done one in years. Maybe I should. Here's one from a long time ago, and we are talking baby steps for the Sasquatch here.

They're fun, and a good way to use a rather rare piece of briar.

Do as you please, but in my logic, getting two pipes out of a single piece is not as special as getting one really rare shape out. You can get small freehands out of small blocks any day of the week, but a big sweeping horn is hard to find. :D

I'm totally with Sas on this- you've got a ton of briar to play with- plan accordingly.

Like this Sas?

Might leave a little of the plateau showing... dunno.

Might I suggest that if you're going to leave some plateau on the bottom make sure you have a plan on how to make the transition between the plateau and the smooth surface look good. Do some looking at pipes that have used the same shape to see how they did it.

I'm no pro, but I wouldn't leave plat on the bottom and I'd back it away from the plat just a bit. I've had plenty of times where the plat is deeper than I thought it was and ended up with some funny angles on pipes chasing pits.

Oh, and I'd cut the top of the bowl so that it lines up with that cross grain... I think it looks better that way.

That's what I would cut from a block like that, yeah.

Have you got the drilling worked out? It's not super hard, but you might find that grinding a spade with a sharper, more conical end than usual (depending on your usual) might be helpful.

Hi Gershom,

I am just a hobbyist so take this fwiw, I made something yesterday vaguely in this genre. You can take a look here: http://billboylepipes.weebly.com/horn.html and perhaps it will give you some thoughts.

I like the horn idea. It also has given me the answer to a small, odd shaped half moon briar that's been sitting on the shelf in my office for months now, while I bang my head against a brick wall trying to decide what it should be :banghead: . Thanks for the inspiration!

Billiard, thanks for the inspiration! The pipe looks good, but I do not think I am going to try the rustication. I do however plan on using the U shape with the flat bottom being the plateau. What did you use to get that black color on it? Thanks!

Now if I can just get the time to actually do it...
